Top Ten Tuesday

Untitled.001Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. The theme this week is: Top Ten Most Anticipated Releases for the Second Half of the Year. OMG! I have so many books from the first half that I still want to read! So many books and so little time. Honestly, I can’t believe that we are already half-way through 2016. Where did the time go?

Which books are you most looking forward to reading? 💕

I have mixed feelings about And I Darken by Kiersten White. My review will be up soon, but I think I just expected so much more from the book. How could I not? It’s basically what if the sadistic Vlad the Impaler was a woman? While I wasn’t completely sold on the characters or some of the plot lines, I will probably read the sequel. I’m curious where the author will go next with her reimagining of this fascinating (and frightening) character.

“So the question becomes, Daughter of the Dragon, what will you sacrifice? What will you let be taken away so that you, too, can have power?”

I just started reading Wolf By Wolf by Ryan Graudin this week and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to start it. I loved the idea of the book and scooped it up when it was released in October. Then for some reason I can’t really explain, it just sat on my shelf and I had no desire to read it. I’m not too far into it, but Wolf By Wolf is fantastic! I love the voice of main character Yael and the what if scenario. I’m really hoping it gets better and better!

“Once upon a different time, there was a girl who lived in a kingdom of death. Wolves howled up her arm. A whole pack of them–made of tattoo ink and pain, memory and loss. It was the only thing about her that ever stayed the same.”

Oh the feels were intense with this one! I loved Renée Ahdieh’s short story The Moth and the Flame because of the banter between Despina and Jalal. It was adorable and I couldn’t stop smiling. I’m sure that’s why the lady sitting next to me on the plane kept looking at me funny (if not, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it).

“The captain of the Royal Guard wants to impress a lowly handmaiden?”
“A clumsy young man wants to impress a beautiful young woman.” He met her gaze, his dark eyes piercing. “The question is, did it work?”

For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund had been on my TBR for the past year or so. I downloaded it onto my Kindle and kind of just forgot about it. I’m so glad that I rediscovered it, it’s such a fantastic retelling of Jane Austen’s Persuasion (my favourite novel of all time). While reading it a week ago, this quote stood out:

“Envy hurt exponentially more than heartbreak because your soul was torn in two, half soaring with happiness for another person, half mired in a well of selfpity
and pain.”

After finally finishing the Shatter Me trilogy by Tahereh Mafi, I have recently finished the first novella, Destroy Me, which gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of Warner. It is set in between the first and second novel and so far is really well done. Actually, it’s refreshing not to have a story told by Juliette who sometimes was a bit too much for me.

“People seldom realize that they tell lies with their lips and truths with their eyes all the time.”

I have been reading the graphic novel Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon with my students during the past two weeks. It’s based on the true story of four lions that escaped the Baghdad Zoo during the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. I highly recommend it! The illustrations are top notch and while quite short, it offers an interesting perspective on freedom, war and the treatment of non-combatants.

“There’s an old saying, Zill. Freedom can’t be given, only earned.”
